Fear is a raw emotion that gets the blood flowing and our hearts racing. Fear is a devastating feeling that causes a disruption or enhancement in our minds and sometimes our souls. Fight or flight, fear is the body’s reaction to unknown circumstances and consequences. Horror stories are inspired by human reactions to the supernatural or frightening occurrences—things that take our breath away.
The age old question is why people who try so hard to avoid horrifying circumstances would spend so much like watching horror films and reading scary books. Some studies suggest that the real draw to scary movies is the feeling of relief when they are over. Some people understand that the stories are only make believe. Others love the adrenaline rush of a good scare. The helpless female marching through the dark parking lot—that forgets to check the back seat. A friend suggested that a good scare keeps the pain of the real world away for a little bit. Still, I like survival horror because of the deep character development that is on displayed. An old accountant might be your average guy, but when he is facing something—shocking—revolting—and/or out of this world, he changes. This change is what makes my blood boil during a good movie or book. The character that begins the story is rarely the same person when it ends.
